Bulletproof Coffee: Make It in Only 3 Steps

I love homemade bulletproof coffee!

As far as I know, it’s the only way to go. I wish certain coffee bars would add it to their menu, though. 

In the meantime, I’ll stick to making my own.

Yet, the first time I heard the term “bulletproof coffee”, it kind of scared me. I wasn’t sure what I was getting myself into.

I was pleased to find, it’s an easy drink to make, does an excellent job at keeping you feeling full, and can help you stick to your health goals.

Many people drink a bulletproof coffee if they participate in intermittent fasting, follow a low-carb diet, or a keto diet.

Whether you need a filling drink or are simply a coffee fanatic, I’ve got you covered.

Here’s how you can make your own homemade bulletproof coffee:


  • 2 cups of black coffee
  • Alternative sweetener of choice
  • 1 tablespoon of heavy whipping cream
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon of butter
  • Sprinkle of cinnamon (optional)

1. Add Coffee to Blender

This will not be a quiet way to start your day. If you have an immersion blender, it will work to make this coffee beverage.

However, I use my basic stand blender. I begin making the beverage by pouring two cups of black coffee into the blender.

The kicker here is to make sure your blender isn’t plugged up. I accidentally turned mine on during the process, and it was a hot-mess…literally.  

2. Add Ingredients to Taste

The next step may take some playing around with to decide which type of bulletproof coffee will be your new “jam.”

Add a non-sugar sweetener to your coffee (if you normally use sweetener when drinking coffee.) The heavy whipping cream is a must for this drink.

It gives it a frothy texture and adds some fat to the mixture to help you stay full longer. I like the taste of vanilla, but if you aren’t a fan you can omit it.

Some people add coconut oil to their coffee because they feel it helps them stay full but others feel it gives their coffee too much of an oily texture.

I add either coconut oil or butter. I don’t use both. The butter gives the coffee a delicious toffee taste, adds fat to keep you full, and adds to the frothy texture of the homemade bulletproof coffee.

3. Blend and Enjoy!

Once you’ve figured out which ingredients are going to work best for you, place the lid on the blender, mix it up, and pour it into your coffee cup.

I’m ready to enjoy my coffee at this point. However, some like to add a sprinkle of cinnamon to the top before diving in. 

I feel like it gives my coffee a grainy texture, but if you enjoy cinnamon, give it a try. It may become your new favorite way to enjoy this drink.
